Therapy

The term psychotherapy refers to the treatment of psychological disorders with scientifically approved methods and techniques. There are different approaches like psychoanalytic therapy, systemic therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I am specialized in the field of integrative CBT which means that I combine different therapeutic approaches in order to offer you an individual treatment.

Cognitive behavioral therapy maintains that psychological problems evolve from the same learning processes like psychological well-being. Treatment starts with analyzing these learning processes in order to find out about the factors that cause current difficulties. Second, we will have a look at the way in which certain patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behavior are mutually connected.

Based on this we can find out which steps are necessary to facilitate a positive development. The next phase focuses on actively implementing these changes in your everyday life. In order to change old patterns of experience it is essential to consolidate newly acquired content. Therefore, therapy will include exercises for the time inbetween therapy sessions. I am convinced that in the context of therapy it is also important to focus on your resources, that is your strengths and skills. These have often been neglected and need to be (re-)discovered in order to explore new ways of dealing with difficulties.

Schematherapy is an especially useful method for treating revolving life topics. Early experiences with significant others affect us later in life, both positively and negatively. If important needs are not met appropriately during childhood and adolescence, the formed “Schemata” (patterns of thoughts, emotions, behavior, and perceptions) stay highly present during adulthood and can be activated easily. In therapy we aim to change those long-existing patterns in order to broaden your possibilities of taking action. Therefore, techniques that activate emotions like guided imaginations are used.

Acceptance and Commitment-Therapy (ACT) intends to help people to reach a higher level of psychological flexibility and thereby a more fulfilled and self-determined life. Therefore, it is necessary to be in contact with one’s own thoughts and emotions – without withdrawing from them or getting trapped by them. ACT uses a variety of experience-oriented methods like mindfulness meditation.

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) offers different methods by which people can be supported to recognize their own emotional states, to understand them, accept them, and finally to adequately regulate them. Moreover, EFT can enable patients to use helpful emotions more intensively. EFT is also suitable in the absence of psychological difficulties in order to promote emotional intelligence.

Relaxation techniques have a positive effect on a variety of psychological and somatic disorders and stress-related difficulties. Relaxation exercises can add to the therapeutic effect of other methods as well as prevent psychological difficulties and avoid relapses. Depending on your individual situation and preferences I use progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), autogenic training, mindfulness, and hypnotherapeutic techniques.

Hypnotherapy uses different techniques in order to initiate a changed state of consciousness. In this so-called trance rational thinking can step back in order to enable access to subconscious resources and solutions. During the whole process you remain aware of the present situation and are able to control yourself as well as the progress of the hypnosis. Usually, you will be able to remember your experiences during the trance, and are able to transfer new insights to your life.

Procedure

The first appointment (Erstgespräch) is important to get to know each other, to clarify your reasons for therapy inquiry, and to offer you a first impression of my approach.

If we both decide to work together, the so-called Probatorik follows, that is usually 4 sessions for diagnosis, setting of therapy goals as well as the estimated number of sessions needed. This depends on your individual situation and varies from short-term counselling (5-10 sessions), to short-term therapy (25 sessions) and long-term therapy (45-60 sessions). The sessions take 50 minutes and are usually set at a fixed time every week.

Fees

Since I run a private practice, the financing of therapy varies depending on your insurance.

Public health insurance. As a state-certified psychotherapist registered in the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (Kassenärztliche Vereinigung), I am authorized to offer psychotherapy. Nevertheless, only affiliated therapists with a so-called Kassensitz have a special contract that allows the costs for therapy to be directly covered by public health insurance companies. For private practices there is the possibility of reimbursement process (Kostenerstattungsverfahren).

Private health insurance. Usually, the costs are covered by your insurance and therapy can start immediately. Please make sure, to contact your insurance in advance to find out whether psychotherapy is covered by your contract, how many sessions are covered, and the specific requirements for application.

Self-pay. The advantage of a privately paid therapy or counselling is that it can start immediately without any further formalities or notification of your insurance company.

The fees are determined by the Gebührenordnung für Psychologische Psychotherapeuten und Kinder- und Jugendlichenpsychotherapeuten (GOP).
If you are in a difficult financial situation, the fee for the first appointment can be reduced. Please contact me for further information.
